Greek Democracy Classical Greece has been called the 'cradle of Democracy'. This is because we can trace the beginnings of the US system back to this period of time. Athens, Greece is home to the world's 1st democratic constitution. Athens gave two rights to all free men (over 20 yrs old): The right to vote and the right to speak freely. The Roman Republic Rome started off as a MONARCHY, but changed into a Rebublic. Rome was led by two consuls who were elected by the people and reported to the senate. The senate was made up of landowners, who served for life. Roman Law Bronze tablets, refered to as the 'Twelve Tables' held the laws regarding wills, courts, and property. These laws applied to EVERYONE, including the nobles.

How did Greek democracy, the Roman 1. Republican government, and Roman law law influence Western Civilization? What city is know as the 'cradle of democracy'? Athen gave what two rights to men over the age of 20?

Writing Assignment Write a paragraph describing the Roman influences on today's society.
